Adult Education
The historic Disciples connection to higher education is a source of pride and identity for our denomination. Serious Biblical scholarship is engaged by leadership and laity alike. Critical thinking and the freedom to question are welcome here in pursuits both intellectual and spiritual.
Adult education takes place in a variety of venues throughout the year. During the fall and spring semesters, there are two evening classes per week at First Christian, a Tuesday Bible study and a Wednesday dinner study that has explored everything from large-scale problems in the church such as anti-Semitism and homophobia to local church concerns such as assisting Carbondale’s homeless population.
The popular Martha & Mary book club is a dynamic group of women of all ages that meets monthly to explore religious and spiritual books together. First Christian members are also active in numerous organizations in the community and members hold posts with the Carbondale Interfaith Council, the Gaia House Interfaith Center and Good Samaritan Ministries, among others.
